Leadership in Fellowship
Starting in August, I was fortunate enough to receive the opportunity to work alongside a team of volunteers to help lead the youth group at the church I grew up at. Our team has been hard at work trying to build our youth group up in members, while still engaging the current youth that we have in our program. Every Sunday night, we meet from 5:30-8:00 to eat dinner, sing songs, play games, and worship together through various group discussions and other activities. Through my experience with the youth group, I have re-established a singing program (we sing at least two songs every Sunday after dinner) that had dropped off, co-taught a 3 week series with another counselor, attended a senior-high retreat, facilitated our Youth Sunday program, helped plan our upcoming 5K fundraiser, recruited new youth to come to youth group, and fostered strong relationships with many of the youth who frequently attend. I have learned so much about my own faith and how to help others develop theirs. I have continued to develop my knowledge about teaching and its different elements, have a newfound appreciation of what it means to be persistent, and have continued to shape and improve my own servant leadership style. I can only hope that as I continue my role as counselor in the upcoming months, I will take what I have learned to be a better leader and volunteer in the youth program.
